The Kitchen

The center of this house--literally and figuratively, is
the kitchen.  The kitchen/pantry area contains almost 320 square feet (a little more than 1/4 of our entire current house!).  See the layout here:

The center of the kitchen is the range.  Originally, Mark and Julie were looking at the Vulcan 60" commercial range with 10 burners (each generating 26,000 btu's) and 2 ovens each capable of generating 30,000 btu's.  But because the Vulcan is a commercial-only range, it lacks certain safety features--like insulation.  The real problem, though is that the Vulcan uses pilot lights to create ignition instead of electronic spark ignition.  As a result, there are, on the Vulcan, 12 pilot lights constantly burning. Venting such a range is so complex and so expensive as to render it impractical for this residential application.

After investigating a number of alternatives, Mark and Julie settled on the 60" Wolf gas range.  It has dual full-size gas convection ovens, and is capable of generating 16,000 btu's per burner on the range-top.  In beautiful stainless steel with a stainless riser and shelf, it will show itself off spectacularly in front of the exposed brick of the kitchen walls.

This is the kitchen as finally laid out by architect and kitchen designer Phyllis Craver.  You'll see that we've moved the refrigerator and the wall ovens to accommodate the available wall space and layout of the room.

This is the layout of the kitchen range; the cabinets on the right will be at an angle to the range, as depicted in the overhead image above.

This is the wall opposite the range.
...though the saga of the configuration of the range top continues (to read about it, click here).
